About ME

Serving The Community

There was a time, when I was much younger, that I thought I could change the world. When you were younger, maybe you felt that way, too. I realized over time that it is more important to impact your own special corner of the world.

That realization led to my wife and I doing foster care for more than 16 years. It also led to me being on the Orono City Council for eight years, led to me being on the Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose school board these past 10 years – the last two as board chair – and led to me becoming president of the Buffalo Rodeo, serving as a PDC regional director for 4H and becoming a Region 5 director for Minnesota High School Rodeo.

While on the Orono City Council, Orono had one of the lowest property tax rates in Hennepin County and, in my time on the BHM school board, along with other board members, it was a priority to keep the school district’s property tax portion of your tax bill as low as possible.

And now, I am sharing with you my decision to run again for the Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose school board. It has been an honor to serve the district and the people and students in it, and I hope for it to continue.

Whatever body I have been on – city council, school board, rodeo, 4H, high school rodeo – my decisions always have been focused on what is best for the people I serve.

That will continue if I am re-elected to the school board.

As it says on the bhmschools.org website, the BHM school district is “The Place To Dream, Believe and Achieve.” It also says, “The Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose School district offers regionally unmatched opportunities in academics, arts and athletics.” As a member of the BHM school board for more than a decade, I am proud of how the district has positioned itself as a leader in so many areas. With the support of voters in the district, I would be privileged to continue being a part of a district that boasts outstanding administrative leadership, staff, teachers and students.

Some of you know my background, some don’t. Either way, here it is: I moved to Minnesota in 1984 to cover the Vikings for the Star Tribune. In 1989, I became sports columnist for the Pioneer Press, a job I did full-time for nearly 30 years. While at the Pioneer Press, I took on a second full-time job as a member of the KQ Morning Show and spent more than 30 years on the air there.

Back in August 1988, I met my wife Mary in Sweden. The Vikings were playing the Chicago Bears in a preseason game in Goteborg, and Mary was a Vikings cheerleader and, well, nearly 40 years later we have five wonderful children and one terrific grandson. Four of my five children have graduated from Buffalo High School, and the fifth will graduate from BHS next June.

We own a horse farm in Rockford Township, which has a Buffalo mailing address. While my wife gives lessons and offers camps and clinics, I do a daily radio show and podcast that is broadcast on radio stations across Minnesota, including on KRWC in Buffalo. When our kids were younger, we showed Miniature horses and Shetland ponies, and were fortunate enough to have competitive horses who won more than 160 national titles. (It continues to rankle my wife that I have one more national title than her.)
